Opening Prayer

Thank Jesus for comfort, peace, presence and the time we were able to share with Ted.
Yesterday I had the privilege of speaking with Anita, Ted’s wife, about the kind of man, husband and friend Ted was. She spoke sweetly of his love for God’s Word, God’s presence, and Ted’s love for her. He was and is Anita’s best friend, protector, driver and photographer. Ted was a king, because he treated Anita as his queen.
Today we celebrate Ted’s life and legacy. Though he may no longer be with us physically, the memories of how he touched your lives and his legacy live on. It lives on in your lives and in Anita’s live especially. Every time she feels the kindness of a stranger or the encouragement of a friend, Anita will be reminded of the love Ted showed her for the last 7 years. Isn’t that all any of us could hope for? That when we pass from one life to the next, a part of us would be left behind in the world? That the one’s we love would be able to carry on something from our life?
Hebrews 12:1–2 NLT
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.
I love this portion of the Bible because it gives me hope in times like this. The crowd it’s talking about is those who believed in Jesus and loved God’s Word, like Ted. They cheer us on from the throne room of Creator God. But it’s not just them. It’s those of you in this room that have seen the faith of Ted and Anita and how that faith has been a sanctuary for her in the season of confusion and sadness. God is good even when we don’t understand. Even when everything is confusing and backwards. That is why God is constantly referred to as a firm foundation, a strong tower, a refuge. He is our constant in storms when they come because they don’t surprise Him. Ted found peace in that. Anita finds rest in that. You can find rest in that.
Jesus is not scared of our questions or confusion or fear or anger. Especially in moments like these. We can reach out to Him to find peace and hope.

Closing Prayer

Ask for God’s peace, comfort and grace to cover each person. Specifically Anita and Pam
